Head over to any upscale retailer today and you'll notice that the trend is clothing that goes easily from the office to the gym. Whether it's flat shoes with rubber soles, or silken pants that have elasticized waist bands and drawstrings to hold them up, clothing has become comfortable and easy to wear. That's because today's hottest clothing borrows from athletic wear. If you were waiting for it to get even more popular, know that the latest Chanel couture show, largely seen as the arbiter of "cool," featured models walking down the runway in actual white box fresh sneakers instead of high heels or even ballet flats. Are you on board yet?

That was just the beginning of the casual shoe trend. Vans and Converse shoes have become so popular over the past year that in a strange twist, high end designers are copying them instead of the other way around. You can get a logo version from Tory Burch ($200) or leopard skin slip ons ($250) from Alice and Olivia (a line more known for its ball gowns). The fashionista's favourite brand Alexander McQueen paired up with Puma this year to produce a line of running shoes proof that even the edgiest of brands is into the athletic wear trend.

And how to further accessorize this trend? Carry a backpack, of course. Forget the MEC nylon Tods Driving Shoes Mens Sale

As much as the slim or wide leg black office pant will never go out of style, the new style of trouser borrows from the gym as well. Think of jogging pants now available in comfortable silks and crepe that work well for warmer weather. With a drawstring at the waist, these pants promise to be comfortable and stylist no matter where you work. And denim is not exempt: Rag and Bone has a pair of sweat pants printed to look like a worn in pair of jeans, making the casual now ultra comfortable.

The bomber jacket returns this year, with the newer styles updated with high tech fabrics that give the style a decidedly feminine twist. ($400), while 3.1 Philip Lim has one that's made out of organza ($1,200). Rebecca Minkoff's silk version has applique florals on the sleeves ($350). Not just for the weekend, these bomber jackets pair wonderfully well with a pair of tailored black pants: proof that they work in the office.

At Sportchek you can find hoodies that go from the gym to the office. The latest styles from Nike are very on trend like the hoodie cape ($140) in a neutral oatmeal colour that works well with everything. Under Armor, a brand known for sweat absorbing undershirts, has herringbone leggings ($100) that wouldn't look out of place in an office but feel and wear like a yoga pant. They've even designed a line of clothing that is made out of wool, which is quick drying and doesn't absorb sweat the way that other materials can. Even Roxy, a brand known for their surf wear, has a wedge sneaker this season.

Of course, you don't have to break the bank to wear this trend and if you're serious about it, then there's no better place to shop than an actual sporting goods store. Claire Olsen from Sportchek has seen how athletic wear has changed so that it's more acceptable in all areas of life. "Work environments have changed," she points out, "and so casual is more acceptable. Even business casual has drastically changed. People have active lifestyles and don't want to change their wardrobe three times a day. Clothing needs to be flexible, adaptable, and comfortable and sportswear does all those things."

The trend is largely influenced by street style, and what designers are calling "every day, practical wear." No doubt, the steady rise of this trend began in 2012 when high end designer Isabel Marant designed a wedge sneaker. This shoe, essentially a sneaker (some styles even have Velcro!) embedded a wedge inside, giving women model height while still providing them with a shoe that was comfortable and practical. It looked great with jeans or more dressy pants, and is meant to be worn to the office or on the weekend. It became so popular that it was copied many times over and the style is still being sold at more accessible retailers today.
